If You Could Preach Any Passage

Just imagine you weren’t in the middle of a series.  Imagine you could free up two or three days to study any passage and then prepare a message just because you want to.  What passage would it be?  Would it be an old favorite that you haven’t looked at in a while?  Perhaps Psalm 23 or John 3 or maybe 1Corinthians 13?  Would it be something more obscure you’ve always wanted to study, but haven’t had the opportunity?  Perhaps a minor prophet, a story from Kings or the final few verses of an epistle?

If you could study and preach any passage right now, which would it be?  I’d love to hear.

Oh, and one more question – when are you going to do it?  Either in your church, create a gap and preach something just because you want to.  Or maybe find a small local church and offer to speak in their midweek service if they have one.  Or maybe get creative in some other way.  However you do it, just do it.  Every now and then it is good to preach something just because you have the desire.

  1. I’ve got two…

    Ruth 2:8-16
The main point–“Compassion is a pipeline of grace.” I actually am preaching it this coming Sunday.

    1 John 5:13-21
I’ve always been curious by what John mean by “sin that leads to death.” I got to spend some extra time on it a few weeks ago, and it opened up a HUGE “can of worms” that really clarified my understanding of the entire book. It does kind of violate your question… because it’s at the end of my current series. I’ll preach it via video on April 27.

  2. Aaron, now you’ve got me curious about that 1 John verse, because I’ve always wondered about that, too.

Peter, that’s a tough question because so many passages come to mind! I’d probably go with Philippians 4:4-7. As for when I’ll preach it, this goes against the spirit of your blog entry, but it’ll probably end up in a series. We’re doing the book of Philippians next year, and I may sneak in a series called “Classic Passages” that’s just three or four weeks in a row of doing what you’ve suggested.

I have found it helpful to try scheduling weeks between series not just for guest preachers, but also so I’ll have scheduled time to share the kind of message you’ve written about.

    Thanks for your blog!

  3. As I read the comments, I’m curious as to why people are preaching so many series of sermons. Not that it’s bad – just wondering what the benefits of putting all of your sermons into different series is.

  4. Ezekiel has fascinated me for some time now. If I was doing one shot out of the book, it would be chapter 18. I am wondering if the whole chapter is a chiasm because of verse 4 and 32. “Repent and live” would probably be a good title.

  5. Just thought I would add my two cents 🙂

I would preach on a simple verse… 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”

I could talk for days about that one verse!

Take care, God bless you mightily,
    Angie

  6. I would preach a first person on Saul using 1 Chronicles 10. I would showcase his spiral and apply with examples of how pastors today lose everything. They go from anointed by God to losing God’s favor. All because of the offering he botched.
